Why Chicago Brick Facades Become Dark and Stained

Why Brick Should Not Simply Be Blasted With High Pressure

Brick can appear extremely durable, but both brick and mortar can be permanently damaged when pressure washing is performed incorrectly.

Excessive pressure may remove or weaken the outer face of the brick, cut into mortar joints, blow out deteriorated tuckpointing, force water into cracks and openings, and leave streaks or visible wand marks.

Older brick may already be weakened by decades of freezing and thawing, moisture intrusion, previous repairs, incompatible mortar, failed coatings, or earlier aggressive cleaning. Increasing pressure without understanding these conditions can cause unnecessary damage.

More pressure does not automatically produce better brick cleaning. Cleaner selection, dwell time, heat, water volume, spray distance, nozzle choice, rinsing technique, and operator experience are often more important than maximum PSI.

7. Final Review

Brick Restoration Cleaning and Carbon Stain Removal

Some Chicago brick facades cannot be properly cleaned using water alone. Dark atmospheric staining, carbon deposits, soot, and pollution may become deeply embedded within the pores and texture of the masonry.

Professional masonry restoration cleaners can help break the bond between the contaminant and the brick. Proper dwell time allows the product to work before the facade is rinsed, reducing dependence on excessive mechanical pressure.
